Buskin & Batteau

Buskin & Batteau

Thursday, July 8

Tickets $22.50

"Buskin & Batteau are the most musically sophisticated act in folk." ~ The New York Times.

After a thirteen-year hiatus to 1) be dads, and 2) take a nap, Buskin & Batteau are back on the road again. Singer-songwriter-soloists David Buskin & Robin Batteau released their long-anticipated new CD, Red Shoes and Golden Hearts last year. "Their harmonies and wonderful presence on stage is as captivating as ever," says Ron Olesko, host of "Traditions" on WFDU-FM in New Jersey, who called Buskin and Batteau the highlight of 2009’s Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) conference. Boston music critics tag the duo as "post-folkies on cruise control, sexy and magical," and describe their latest release as "acoustic heaven." They continue to offer their audiences, in the words of The Washington Post, "an irresistible amalgam of melodic, sensual pop, folkie grit and killer wit." David Buskin (guitar/piano) and Robin Batteau (guitar/violin) evoke a wide range of emotions in their audiences, ranging from light-hearted amusement at "ESPN", or the pun-filled "Death in Venice", to their well-known songs "The Boy With the Violin and "Guinevere". As professional jingle writers, Buskin & Batteau's voices and tunes have been heard in almost every American household. They've had us listening "to the heartbeat of America", living "in a Burger King Town" and climbing "all aboard Amtrak" to name a few. This popular duo brings their unique style and sound to the stage and the audience has come to expect the unexpected whenever David and Robin perform. Buskin & Batteau combine talent, humor and showmanship with the element of surprise to produce a crowd-pleasing performance.

Coyote Run

Coyote Run

Thursday, August 5

Tickets $20.00

"The take-no-prisoners approach to Celtic music." ~

Gene Shay, WXPN, Philadelphia, PA.

Originally formed in 1999, Coyote Run has changed significantly from its Celtic Folk roots, evolving into one of the hottest bands on the Celtic Rock circuit today. Blending traditional tunes with rich, literate lyrics, compelling melodies and rock, jazz and flamenco instrumental hooks, this band weaves a tapestry unlike any other out there. Their lyrics and music take the audience on a journey that is at once heart stopping and foot stomping. Tears, laughter, clapping and spontaneous dancing are regular features of a Coyote Run concert. Our instrumentation begins with musical elements familiar to fans of Celtic music, i.e. wailing bagpipes, dancing whistles, and intricately woven accordion lines, but then includes the tribal growl of the didgeridoo and the backbeat of the djembe, all couched and supported by world class jazz/rock bass, and driving rhythm guitar. But none of this would work at all, were it not for the symphonic, nuanced and incredibly powerful rock drumming that surrounds, supports and drives all of the music. All of this musical power and richness wraps around our acclaimed lyrics. "Imagine Jethro Tull on Broadway and you start to get the picture." ~Daily Press, VA. In 2002, we answered the call of fans for a live CD and released "Full Throttle Celtic." This album received favorable reviews in Sing Out! magazine and Dirty Linen. This album was followed up in 2004 with another Paul Mills collaboration, "Don't Hold Back." This critically acclaimed album secured Coyote Run's position as one of the premier Celtic Folk acts in America. In 2005, we went a little nuts and decided to release 2 albums within 2 months of each other. "Tend the Fire," & "Pleads the Fifth." In January of 2008, the work began on our seventh CD, "Between Wick and Flame." This CD is clearly the high water mark of all of our albums to date. There is a real buzz about Coyote Run right now, a wave of new energy and excitement among our fans that is palpable. Come and experience the magic that is Coyote Run!

Lucy Kaplansky

Lucy Kaplansky

Friday, August 6

Tickets $20.00

"New York songwriter Lucy Kaplansky is the troubadour laureate of modern city folk." ~ The Boston Globe.

She started out singing in Chicago bars. Then, barely out of high school, Lucy Kaplansky took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Bill Morrissey, Cliff Eberhardt, and others—where she fit right in. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Lucy was everyone’s favorite singing partner, but most often she found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them; in fact, The New York Times said it was "easy to predict stardom for her." Lucy temporarily left the musical fast track to pursue a doctorate in Psychology and open her own private practice, although she continued to sing. Lucy was often pulled back into the studio by her friends (who now had contracts with record labels), wanting her to sing on their albums. Now after returning to recording and performing full-time, Kaplansky’s voice continues to remain in high demand by her peers. She harmonized on Colvin’s Grammy-winning Steady On, on Nanci Griffith’s Lone Star State of Mind and Little Love Affairs, and on four of John Gorka’s albums. She also landed soundtrack credits, singing with Suzanne Vega on Pretty in Pink and with Griffith on The Firm, and several commercial credits as well—including "The Heartbeat of America" for Chevrolet. She can also be heard on the Greg Brown tribute album Going Driftless (also featuring: Ani DiFranco, Iris Dement, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Gillian Welch, Eliza Gilkyson, and others). She teamed with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form the supergroup Cry Cry Cry, the three choosing to celebrate the amazing revitalization in contemporary songwriting. The resulting album, Cry Cry Cry (which The New Yorker dubbed "a collection of lovely harmonizing and pure emotion," and to which Entertainment Weekly gave an "A" rating), has been an astonishing success in stores and on radio. A national tour of sold-out concerts by the trio served to introduce Lucy’s luminous voice to a new expanse of eager listeners. Lucy’s The Red Thread followed the commercial and critical hit "Every Single Day" (released on 9/11/2001) and marked Lucy’s tenth year (and fifth album) on Red House Records. Lucy’s rising popularity has led to appearances on the CBS Morning Show, NPR’s Weekend and Morning Editions, Mountain Stage, West Coast Live, Acoustic Cafe, and Vin Scelsa’s Idiot’s Delight. Lucy also contributed her story to a unique new book, SOLO: Women Singer-Songwriters in Their Own Words, which includes some of the best known women on the music scene today including Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, and Sarah McLachlan. She was also featured in Lipshtick, a collection of essays by NPR commentator Gwen Macsai. Kaplansky's voice continues to remain in high demand by her peers.

"The imagery and emotion of Lucy Kaplansky’s original lyrics combine with the power and texture of her sumptuous voice to create an illuminating evening of songs that work their way deep into the heart. Fusing alternative country, roots rock, and folk music with rare style and intelligence — not to mention a truly charming stage presence — Lucy presents her thoughtful songs about the human condition with warmth and power." ~ Freight & Salvage.

Stephanie Corby & David Glaser

Tickets $16.00

Stephanie Corby

Stephanie Corby possesses a rich, powerful voice that transcends the borders of musical style. This soulful songstress has successfully fused her classical, jazz and blues backgrounds into a distinct R&B-flavored acoustic sound. Singer/Songwriter Ellis Paul says the following about Stephanie's voice: "she has the kind of voice that makes the waters part; loud sweet and soulful…..she could have saved Moses a lot of trouble." In Feb 2008, Corby released her 3rd studio album "More To Show You." The album takes the listener on a soulful pop journey that occasionally veers down a country road. Recorded in North Carolina, it was produced by Jonathan Byrd and features world-class musicians such as bass player Robert Sledge (Ben Folds 5), guitarist Will McFarlane (Bonnie Raitt, Etta James, Bobby Blue Bland), Wes Lachot and Kevin Brock.

David Glaser

David Glaser is an Americana/Acoustic recording artist known for his unique voice, instrumental skill, and deft, evocative songwriting. "...each time you listen, you will find yourself turning over something that you missed before - a new insight, a new story, or a new harmony, and it is always a joy. …truly captivating." ~ Mary Bryan, Chesapeake Music Guide. He is currently promoting his newest solo CD titled "Cars and Lovers," a conceptual work featuring 10 songs involving the highway and the heart. David is a sought after instrumentalist (guitar & mandolin); you may have seen him perform with Lowen and Navarro, Karen Mal, and Stephanie Corby, to name a few.

"David Glaser spins his stories and songs out of whole cloth. Denim, mostly. …you may find yourself humming "I keep your picture in my car" on Wednesday of next week..." ~ Songwriter David Morreale, host of the S.N.A.F.U. songwriter series.

Bill Staines

Bill Staines

Thursday, August 19

Tickets $17.00

"Any new song that can live comfortably beside the well-worn songs of folk tradition has a good chance of surviving the test of time. Such, we believe, are the songs of Bill Staines" ~ Charles "Sandy" Paton, Folk Legacy Records.

Anyone not familiar with the music of Bill Staines is in for a special treat. For over thirty-five years, Bill has traveled back and forth across North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concerts, clubs and coffeehouses. A New England native, Bill became involved with the Boston- Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960's and, for a time, emceed the Sunday hootenanny at the renowned Club 47 in Cambridge. Bill quickly became a popular performer in the Boston area. In 1971, after one of his performances, a reviewer for The Phoenix stated that Bill was "simply Boston's best performer." A decade later, both in 1980 and 1981, the annual Reader's Poll of The Boston Globe selected him as a "favorite performer." In 1991, Bill entered his forth decade as a folk performer with an international reputation as an artist. Singing mostly his own songs, he has become one of the most popular singers on the folk music circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year. Bill weaves a magical blend of wit and gentle humor into his performances, and as one reviewer wrote, "he has a sense of timing to match the best stand-up comic." His music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease, his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon.

Mack also performs as a solo singer/songwriter, as lead singer of the Limeliters and with The Hard Travelers.  Mack Bailey is a nationally acclaimed singer/songwriter who is gaining an ever-larger audience with his strong, expressive classically trained tenor voice, with an impressive range and pure clean quality.  He writes sensitive original songs that express the deepest of human emotion, social conscience, and lighthearted fun.  In concerts, he touches the listener's heart and tickles their funny bone. Tenor Mack Bailey has been hailed, by no less an authority than Glenn Yarbrough, as “the next great singer in folk music”.  He has a rich history of major concert appearances. As a member of The Hard Travelers, he has shared the stage with numerous artists including Brooks & Dunn, Randy Travis, Alabama, Barbara Mandrell, Chet Atkins, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill & Amy Grant, Kathy Mattea, Tom Rush, Tom Paxton, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kenny Rogers, Alan Jackson, The Oak Ridge Boys, Brad Paisley, John Denver and Bill Danoff.  Using John Denver's music, Mack taught himself to play the guitar at an early age, and John’s example taught him how to sing a song.  Today, the Limeliters and John Denver continue to play an active role in Mack’s professional life, not only as a Limeliters, but also with his prominent role in the nationally touring show "A Musical Tribute to John Denver" with many of John's former band members and production crew.  Mack’s rich melodic voice even earned him the prestigious WAMMIE award (Washington Area Music Awards) for Best Male Vocal in the Traditional Folk category. www.mackbailey.com

Chris Smither

Chris Smither

Thursday, September 23

Tickets $22.50

Honing a synthesis of folk and blues for more than 40 years, Chris Smither is truly an American original.  Having released twelve albums since the early 1970s, Chris is a profound songwriter, a blistering guitarist and, as he puts it, a 'one-man band to the bone.' Chris melds the styles of his two major influences, Lightnin' Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt, into his own signature guitar sound.  His music continues to draw deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets and humanist philosophers.  Reviewers praise his dazzling guitar work, gravelly voice and songwriting. Acoustic Guitar magazine has written that “Smither sings about the big things - life, love, loss - in a penetrating and poetic yet unpretentious way.”   “With a weary, well-traveled voice and a serenely intricate finger-picking style, Mr. Smither turns the blues into songs that accept hard-won lessons and try to make peace with fate.” ~ New York Times.  He may be best known for writing "Love You Like A Man" which Bonnie Raitt and most recently, jazz great Diana Krall have covered.  His music has also been covered by numerous other artists and  featured in various soundtrack albums, independent film, television and commercials. Almost always a solo performer, Chris tours nationally and internationally, performing over 150 concerts a year at clubs, theaters and festivals.  Chris' newest record TIME STANDS STILL came out on his own Mighty Albert imprint through Signature Sounds Records in September 2009.   www.smither.com
