LUCY KAPLANSKY

Thursday, April 30th
Tickets $20.00
CD Release
"That Kind of Love"
“New York songwriter Lucy Kaplansky is the troubadour laureate of modern city folk.”
The Boston Globe
She started out singing in Chicago bars. Then, barely out of high school, Lucy Kaplansky took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Bill Morrissey, Cliff Eberhardt, and others—where she fit right in. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Lucy was everyone’s favorite singing partner, but most often she found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them; in fact, The New York Times said it was “easy to predict stardom for her.” Lucy temporarily left the musical fast track to pursue a doctorate in Psychology and open her own private practice, although she continued to sing. Lucy was often pulled back into the studio by her friends (who now had contracts with record labels), wanting her to sing on their albums.
Now after returning to recording and performing full-time, Kaplansky’s voice continues to remain in high demand by her peers. She harmonized on Colvin’s Grammy-winning Steady On, on Nanci Griffith’s Lone Star State of Mind and Little Love Affairs, and on four of John Gorka’s albums. She also landed soundtrack credits, singing with Suzanne Vega on Pretty in Pink and with Griffith on The Firm, and several commercial credits as well—including “The Heartbeat of America” for Chevrolet. She can also be heard on the Greg Brown tribute album Going Driftless (also featuring: Ani DiFranco, Iris Dement, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Gillian Welch, Eliza Gilkyson, and others).
She teamed with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form the supergroup Cry Cry Cry, the three choosing to celebrate the amazing revitalization in contemporary songwriting. The resulting album, Cry Cry Cry (which The New Yorker dubbed “a collection of lovely harmonizing and
pure emotion,” and to which Entertainment Weekly gave an “A” rating), has been an astonishing success in stores and on radio. A national tour of sold-out concerts by the trio served to introduce Lucy’s luminous voice to a new expanse of eager listeners. Lucy’s The Red Thread followed the commercial and critical hit “Every Single Day” (released on 9/11/2001) and marked Lucy’s tenth year (and fifth album) on Red House Records. Lucy’s rising popularity has led to appearances on the CBS Morning Show, NPR’s Weekend and Morning Editions, Mountain Stage, West Coast Live, Acoustic Café, and Vin Scelsa’s Idiot’s Delight. Lucy also contributed her story to a unique new book, SOLO: Women Singer-Songwriters in Their Own Words, which includes some of the best known women on the music scene today including Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, and Sarah McLachlan. She was also featured in Lipshtick, a collection of essays by NPR commentator Gwen Macsai. Kaplansky's voice continues to remain in high demand by her peers.
“The imagery and emotion of Lucy Kaplansky’s original lyrics combine with the power and texture of her sumptuous voice to create an illuminating evening of songs that work their way deep into the heart. Fusing alternative country, roots rock, and folk music with rare style and intelligence — not to mention a truly charming stage presence — Lucy presents her thoughtful songs about the human condition with warmth and power.” ~ Freight & Salvage.

VANCE GILBERT

Thursday, May 7th
Tickets $20.00
"Boston based, Philadelphia raised guitarist Vance Gilbert is among the quintessential musical poets of his time. His lyrics are highly personal, his tenor vocals fluid and enthralling . . .. musical risks punctuated by passionate vocal delivery, brilliantly intuitive guitar playing, and immeasurable courage . . . .gives you a feeling of utter joy."
Dirty Linen Magazine
There comes a time in a musician's career that tribute be paid to the material that originally inspired. ANGELS, CASTLES, COVERS (latest CD) is Vance's tip of the hat to the many songs that he's admired, loved, coveted, and covered over a 20 plus year career. The album is a daring, brilliant mix of his and fan favorite "cover" songs. How many acoustic albums do you know have a version Al Green's ‘I'm So Tired Of Being Alone’ with accordion and mandolin? Sam Cooke's ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ and Jimi Hendrix's ‘Castles Made Of Sand’ get classic Vance Gilbert solo acoustic treatment? Motown is represented by the grooving Vance /Lori McKenna duet ‘Aint Nothin' Like The Real Thing,’ a solo excursion of Aretha Franklin's hit ‘Until You Come Back To Me’ (That's What I'm Gonna Do), and an inspired introspective reading of Stevie Wonder's ‘Heaven Help Us All’ with vocal guest Tracy Grammar. Joni Mitchell's ‘A Case Of You’ and Shawn Colvin's ‘Cry Like An Angel,’ get lovingly recreated on this disc. ‘Rainy Night In Georgia,’ ‘Save The Last Dance For Me,’ and ‘It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference,’ finish this list of classics that are Vance's treasures and now ours as well. Gilbert is a formidable vocalist. His voice has the beauty of a choral singer, the strength and control of Broadway’s finest, the power of lead rock singers and enough play to match any comedic imitator. Vance’s live shows are spellbinding!

Ellis Paul

Thursday, May 21
Tickets $20.00
Traditional folk themes of world peace and harmony resonate with immediacy, but are delivered with a gentle touch
"The Million Chameleon March," "The Little Red Rose"
Ellis Paul is one of the leading voices in American songwriting. He was a principle leader in the wave of singer/songwriters that emerged from the Boston folk scene, creating a movement that revitalized the national acoustic circuit with an urban, literate, folk pop style that helped renew interest in the genre in the 1990's. His charismatic, personally authentic performance style has influenced a generation of artists away from the artifice of pop, and closer towards the realness of folk. Paul remains the most mainstream-friendly folk songwriter to emerge from Boston since Tom Rush. Between 1993 and 2004, he won an unprecedented 13 Boston Music Awards, and his songs were heard on hit TV shows Ed and MTV's Real World; and in the soundtracks of several Farrelly Brothers films, including "Me, Myself, & Irene," starring Jim Carrey, and "Shallow Hal," with Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow. Director Peter Farrelly has called Paul "a national treasure." Ellis has released 14 CDs, and recently explored new media avenues with a documentary/concert DVD called "3,000 Miles," and "Notes from the Road," a critically acclaimed book of poems and stories. Paul’s newest CD “Dragonfly” (ages 5 & up) serves up a deft, soulful acoustic mix of American folk and contemporary pop in songs that find magic in road trips, dragonflies, "The Star Inside the Apple" and swings and pinwheels - simple pleasures.

John Flynn

Thursday, June 4
Tickets $17.00
“ With a poet’s voice and a heart tuned to justice, John Flynn’s voice and songs sing for us all.”
Scott Sheldon of Sing Out! magazine
John sings from the heart. His powerful songs of humanity and hope are deeply rooted in the traditions of Woody Guthrie. From barbed political verse to joyous fun-loving lyrics for kids, John paints vivid, lasting images with words and music drawn from a palate of awareness, irony, humor, and compassion.
Songwriter and activist John Flynn calls himself a “hopeful pessimist.” The pessimism comes from an honest clear-eyed assessment of the condition of the world we live in. The hope comes from a deep-rooted faith in the beauty and resilience of the human spirit. In an artist of Flynn’s caliber, the tension inherent in these seemingly contradictory points of view yields the kind of songs that moved Kris Kristofferson to compare Flynn to the best writers he knows, and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott to boast “John Flynn is the John Lennon of the plasma generation!”
John began writing professionally in 1980 after graduating from Temple University with a degree in political science. A staff writing contract with Combine Music, and a Billboard Magazine. In the early 90’s, Flynn performed heavily in and around his native Philadelphia where his first self-released CDs began to receive extensive airplay on AAA radio giant, WXPN. His first main stage appearance at the 1995 Philadelphia Folk Festival cemented John’s reputation as a dynamic original contemporary folk artist. Songs that Flynn wrote, for his own four children, became the basis of two highly acclaimed family CDs. He was awarded the American Library Association’s Notable Recording Award. John appears regularly on the Peabody Award-winning children’s radio program “Kid’s Corner” and continues to present extremely popular assemblies and creative-writing workshops.
In 2005, Arlo Guthrie invited John to join his post-Katrina “Train to New Orleans Tour.” Arlo says of John, “More than just a good song writer, performer, or guitar player, John Flynn is a friend because he actually does the kinds of things to help make the world a little better.”

SONiA

Thursday, July 9
Tickets $18.00
Whether in the bomb shelters "Miklats" in Israel or summer camps in Palestine, Human Rights Events, Colleges, Festivals or Venues around the world SONiA is always striving to ‘disappear fear’ and spread her message of Peace. In fall 2007 SONiA released a new CD with her band ‘disappear fear’ to the world (al mundo). “t a n g o" features 13 songs in Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic and English. The music matches the words in poetry about Love, Peace and Equality; themes familiar to SONiA's writing since the creation of ‘disappear fear.’ After releasing three albums on their own disappear fear signed with Warner Chappell Publishing and Rounder Records in 1994 for the release of their self-titled CD. The CD won multiple awards including the GLAAD Award for Best Album, a GLAMA award, and Top Release of the Year by Mix Magazine. The next release, "Seed in the Sahara," was produced by Springsteen's piano player, Roy Bittan and won the GLAMA for best band. In 1998 Rounder released "Almost Chocolate," SONiA's first solo CD. During that year SONiA toured Europe (Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands) and Australia for the first time.. "Me,Too" her 1999 release won Female Artist of the Year at the GLAMAs. "Me,Too" was also later chosen by the HRC (Human Rights Campaign) along with songs by U2 and many others for their compilation CD. "Me,Too" was also chosen by the Philadelphia Folk Festival for their 40th Year Anniversary CD. Following another solo release "Live at the Down Home," SONiA released “No Bomb Is Smart” to rave reviews and a nomination for “Best Contemporary Folk.” She decided it was time to bring back the harmonies which disappear fear has always been known for and added Laura Cerulli on vocals, percussion and drums. SONiA has written several soundtracks for films including the 2006 documentary Autumn’s Harvest directed by Dave Marshall. The film is playing at film festivals around the world. Seamus Kennedy

Thursday, July 16
Tickets $17.00
Long before there was a computer on every desk, Seamus Kennedy was providing "interactive entertainment" to delighted audiences from one end of the country to another. He is quick with a quip and likes nothing better than to discover someone in the audience who is similarly inclined. He makes it all seem so effortless that it is easy to miss that he is a superb instrumentalist with an apparently infinite repertoire. The depth of his musicality allows him to tailor his show to the audience before him, whether it be children, families or adults. Originally from Belfast in Northern Ireland, Seamus sings the music of his native land with emotion born of knowing its history firsthand. But he is far from simply a singer of Celtic songs. Fast-paced humor is very much a part of what Seamus does, whether he's telling a series of rapid-fire jokes or launching into a lyrical parody. He will segue seamlessly from an Irish ballad about a dying town to a rollicking reel and then move into American music, equally at home with folk, pop, country or traditional. Throughout it all, he is having such a grand time that you can't help but want to join in. (...a wonderfully entertaining Irishman with a happy-to-see-you smile that could light up the sky...a captivating performance.” ~ Anchorage Times. Toby’s new CD 'Hand Picked' made the Folk DJ 'Top Albums' Charts for 3 consecutive months, is the most added CD in the Roots Americana Charts and over 160 radio stations are now playing it nationwide.

SPECIAL SUNDAY CONCERT:
Cheryl Wheeler

July 26
Start time: 7:00 p.m.
Tickets $30
"Rare artist...strong poetry, complex melodies, clever wit."
SingOut!
It has always seemed as if there were two Cheryl Wheelers, with fans of the New England songwriter relishing watching the two tussle for control of the mic. There is poet-Cheryl, writer of some of the prettiest, most alluring and intelligent ballads on the modern folk scene. And there is her evil twin, comic-Cheryl, a militant trend defier and savagely funny social critic. The result is a delightful contrast between poet and comic. Poet-Cheryl writes achingly honest songs of love and loss. Contrasting the prosaic landscapes of her native small-town America with the hopelessly rootless life of the traveling performer, she touches the common chords with any who feel the tug between our busy, clamorous times and the timeless longing for simplicity and silence. Her deceptively plain-spun songs have been hits for such main-stream stars as Suzy Bogguss (Aces) and Dan Seals (Addicted), and have been recorded by everyone from Bette Midler, Maura O’Connell, and Peter Paul and Mary; to Juice Newton and Garth Brooks. Comic-Cheryl comes on like Groucho-in-a-housecoat; a fiercely everyday woman with a barbed-wire tongue. Shredding the mores of our gossipy, greedy, trend-obsessed culture, Wheeler always aims enough darts at herself to never seem sanctimonious. Wheeler was born in the small town of Timonium, Maryland. The wistful rural vistas she glimpses so poignantly through her fleeting windshield really do represent the deep pull of place she feels in her wandering life. With the possible exception of Greg Brown, no modern songwriter comes to mind who can write as convincingly about the sheer, simple-hearted joy of a nice day; whether a warm spring one spent driving down southern back roads, or a chilly gray one spent thinking properly dark thoughts at a bayside hotel. Where others seek the startling image, the ‘Big Event,’ Wheeler wraps her songs around the familiar image, the shared event. When it’s comic-Cheryl’s turn, the poet simply turns over the mic and allows the comic to be displayed in her native habitat: the stage. Wheeler can comically lampoon modern culture while thoughtfully teasing herself and the audience. As the two forces smooth their conflict, taking their separate turns and melding into the same artistic vision, Wheeler emerges as a gifted and openhearted songwriter approaching the sure summit of her craft. Audience members’ abilities to find their own lives reflected in the sweet spaces of her songs reveals an artist comfortably wearing the austere genius that defines folk music’s best traditions.. More confidently and beautifully than ever before, she proves that the poet and the comic are one and the same.

Toby Walker

Thursday, July 30
Tickets $17.00
"You haven't lived until you've seen Toby Walker in concert. He's not just a master guitarist, but a consummate entertainer. "
John Platt - WFUV
Toby Walker is a unique, accomplished fingerstyle guitar virtuoso adept at blues, rags and hot country picking, coaxing more out of a guitar than anyone can imagine, but the originality doesn't end there. He is also a skilled singer and songwriter who draws inspiration from traditional and contemporary music. Toby’s passion for the blues and other traditional America music sent him into the deep south where he tracked down old time musicians of an earlier era, learning directly at the feet of Etta Baker, Jack Owens and many others. He shares this music and the stories of his travels in each of his performances. Toby takes this foundation and creates something uniquely his own and has been eagerly received in concert halls, festivals, schools and coffeehouses throughout the U.S., England and Europe. His songs can make you shake with laughter or, bring a tear to your eye. Among Toby’s credits are teaching in the schools for Carnegie Hall, instructing guitar at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch in Ohio and winning the prestigious International Blues Challenge Award in Memphis. He has twice been featured in the New York Times and has appeared on the Main stage at the famous Philadelphia Folk Festival.

BOB SIMA & KEVIN SO
Thursday, August 6
Tickets $16.00
"It's really rare that I receive a CD that I can honestly say doesn't have a weak track. With Bob Sima's Pour it On, I can say that. This is one first class, "feel good" recording, and it is extremely infectious. This is one that I'll play over and over and over. It's upbeat, groovy, warm, comfortable and ultra listenable. And the star of this production is Sima's voice. He's just got one of those perfectly accessible sets of pipes that will please everyone."
Christy Claxton - Stave Magazine
Bob Sima literally burst onto the singer-songwriter scene after taking hiatus from his band Stereopool, a highly successful acoustic power trio, from Annapolis, MD. Stereopool has made a name for themselves in the local and regional scene for their brand of energetic, evocative acoustic power folk music. They shared the stage with NRBQ, Eddie from Ohio, Ari Hest and many local legends and landed a UK distribution deal with Smart Choice Music (Kathleen Edwards, John Prine, Lyle Lovett) and were featured on the Smart Choice Sampler which landed them in Maverick Magazine. November 2006, Bob released his first solo release entitled Pour It On. Produced by David Weber in Bloomington, Indiana (Krista Detor, Carrie Newcomer) was quickly named "CD OF THE YEAR" by the former Westside Café. Pour It On is an amazing collection of songs captured "in the moment" with a very live feel. It features Krista Detor and Jason Wilbur (John Prine, Todd Snider, Iris Dement). Bob's song "Amazed By You" has landed him in the top 1% of all time in the Acoustic Genre at garageband.com. He has also reached #2 ALL-Time in Male Vocals (Acoustic). His music has won awards from Songwriteruniverse.com, has been webcasted, podcasted and beamed through satellite radio waves. Bob has played many of the top venues in the mid Atlantic including Rams Head OnStage, IOTA, World Café Live, Fletchers, The Cellar Stage, Columbia Lakefront Concert Series, Dewey Beach Music Conference and the National Folk Alliance Festival and Conference, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and the Susquehanna Music and Arts Festival. Bob is also a highly sought after house concert player and has played dozens of house concerts all across the country. Bob also hosts and books a singer songwriter in the round at the Austin Grill in Rockville, MD.

In a little more than a decade of performing original music around the world, Kevin So has earned the respect of his fellow musicians, won over members of press and radio (the Boston Globe, WFUV, and many more), and has built a loyal fan base across the United States. With the sky still the limit, he has spent more than 15 years giving free rein to his musical imagination. Born and raised in the greater Boston area, So channeled an early passion for singing into the start of a career with his 1990 appearance on the nationally syndicated Fox TV show “Big Break” hosted by Natalie Cole. In 1994, So toured the country as a member of a cover band. When not playing keyboards and singing on stage with the group, he spent a considerable amount of time in hotel rooms listening to the recordings of early Bob Dylan and the Delta blues of Robert Johnson. By 1995, So had quit the band and became a regular face on the open-mic circuit in Cambridge. His strong musicianship and natural showmanship as a solo singer/songwriter caught the attention of Boston Globe pop critic Steve Morse — who wrote that Kevin was “unusually talented.” The next year, Kevin took to the interstates for his first taste of touring as a solo act. At the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, Austin Chronicle music writer took notice, saying that So was “the big discovery who put holes back into the music.” The release of Kevin’s first full length album, Pendulum, in 1996 signaled the arrival of a top-flight storyteller who kept his every blues, folk and pop stylistic flourish in the service of his melodically rich music. In the summer of 2007, Kevin was the proud recipient of the "Overall Excellence Award" (Outstanding Music & Lyrics) for his work in "VICTOR WOO: THE AVERAGE ASIAN AMERICAN," a musical loosely based on his life. It debuted in August at the 2007 New York International Fringe Festival to packed houses. The release of So’s A Brighter Day saw Kevin on the road once again throughout 2007 and 2008, both as bandleader and as a solo act, opening for Keb’ Mo’ on several occasions. Always making new friends, So continues to tour the country at a vigorous clip. His latest effort Best Foot Forward finds Kevin So going back to his acoustic folk/blues roots. Recorded and mixed by long time friend and collaborator Steve Rapson in just three days, this next album gives his fans and friends what they’ve witnessed live and have been requesting for a long time – acoustic guitar and vocal.

BILL STAINES
Thursday, August 13
Tickets $17.00
"Any new song that can live comfortably beside the well-worn songs of folk tradition has a good chance of surviving the test of time. Such, we believe, are the songs of Bill Staines"
Charles "Sandy" Paton, Folk Legacy Records
Anyone not familiar with the music of Bill Staines is in for a special treat. For over thirty-five years, Bill has traveled back and forth across North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concerts, clubs and coffeehouses. A New England native, Bill became involved with the Boston- Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960's and, for a time, emceed the Sunday hootenanny at the renowned Club 47 in Cambridge. Bill quickly became a popular performer in the Boston area. In 1971, after one of his performances, a reviewer for The Phoenix stated that Bill was "simply Boston's best performer." A decade later, both in 1980 and 1981, the annual Reader's Poll of The Boston Globe selected him as a “favorite performer.” In 1991, Bill entered his fourth decade as a folk performer with an international reputation as an artist. Singing mostly his own songs, he has become one of the most popular singers on the folk music circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year. Bill weaves a magical blend of wit and gentle humor into his performances, and as one reviewer wrote, "He has a sense of timing to match the best stand-up comic." His music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease, his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon.

BETH PATTERSON
Thursday, August 20
Tickets $17.00
Beth Patterson, a Lafayette, Louisiana native, was born in a swamp. Described by viewers as “a cross between a cobra and a puppy,” multi-instrumentalist Beth Patterson is foremost a player of the eight and ten-stringed Irish bouzoukis. Known for her razor wit and musical versatility, her performances are chock-full of drive, savage energy, and passion, laced with humor and rapport with her listeners, dishing out an eclectic repertoire of original and traditional songs. She integrates her quirky, progressive sound with Celtic music and other ethnic styles, resulting in her own sound she dubs “SWAP” (Songwriter/World/Acoustic/Progressive). This musical mongrel began her career in her early teens as a classical oboist and a Cajun bass player but not truly belonging to any of these, set out to create her own niche when she was adopted by a stray bouzouki. After moving to New Orleans, she began to play the circuit, initially intending to do the folksy thing, but accepted gigs of all types left and right because no one told her that they shouldn’t be played on the bouzouki. Beth later fled to Ireland, studying ethnomusicology at University College Cork, where she explored the music of Ireland, West Africa, India, Indonesia, and the Caribbean, and began to experiment with fusions of these world gems with her musical old flames. This finally rendered her with the mind of a prog rocker and the heart of a world music-lover. Beth managed to receive a bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy from Loyola University, New Orleans. She has released four CDs and has received widespread airplay in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan. She has appeared on over ninety recordings (including the soundtrack to the motion picture The One-Eyed King, starring William Baldwin and Armand Assante, and the nationally-charting Change of Habit by her former band The Poor Clares). She’s performed in eleven countries. Over sixty of her original compositions have been recorded, either by herself or by various artists across the US, France, Ireland, and New Zealand. But she claims that she won’t be satisfied until she can start her own “Bethodist” religion (a fellowship that one can join by purchasing one of her CDs and/or bringing a covered dish – but don’t worry about the food - Baldwin’s can take care of that part!)
