THE SQUID JIGGERS

Thursday, January 19
Tickets $18
The Squid Jiggers are Maine-based folk duo comprised of inveterate musician-entertainers, Dave Rowe and Troy R. Bennett. They took their name from the A.R. Scammell song "Squid Jigging Ground," a wonderful musical depiction of fishing for squid in the waters off Newfoundland. They combine their talents on guitar, bass, bodhrán, and tin whistles to lay down a thunderous musical base for their robust vocal harmonies.
Dave Rowe was brought up on the Maine music scene, learning the music trade literally at the feet of his late father, Tom Rowe, while the elder Rowe was traveling the country playing bass guitar with Schooner Fare. Starting out as a young roadie and coffee gofer for his dad, Dave began playing out professionally as a bassist at the age of 15, and hasn’t had a real job since! In 1993 the Rowe men got together and formed a duo, which eventually became known as Turkey Hollow when Denny Breau joined. With Tom’s passing in 2004, Dave formed the critically acclaimed Dave Rowe Trio, with which he continues to tour as lead vocalist, and guitarist. With the formation of The Squid Jiggers, Dave comes full circle, picking up his dad’s trademark Steinberger bass guitar and playing many of the songs he used to hear Schooner Fare perform so many years ago.
Troy Bennett grew up collecting Schooner Fare ticket stubs and albums. He started his professional career touring with the Portland, Maine Irish band, Rakish Paddy. Upon leaving Rakish Paddy he adopted the gypsy life, traveling Europe with his guitar, collecting stories and busking on street corners. He eventually buckled down, studying Anglo-Irish literature at University College Galway and the University of Southern Maine. On his return to the states, he started a Celtic duo called Bailey’s Mistake, as well as the Half Moon Jug Band, a high-octane folk group specializing in new uses for kazoos and banjos. The Half Moon Jug Band continues to tour extensively across New England.
BILL DANOFF & OWEN DANOFF

Thursday, January 26
Tickets $20
Bill Danoff has been extraordinarily successful on the international stage. He has been singing and writing songs since the late 1960s when he performed and co-wrote songs with John Denver at the Cellar Door in Georgetown, an historic area of Washington, DC, When Bill and his then partner, Taffy Nivert, invited Denver to help them finish writing a song, little did anyone know that the song would soar to the top of the charts. "Take Me Home Country Roads" catapulted John Denver into national prominence. Another Danoff-Nivert song, "I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado" was recorded by Denver and it became the theme song of Colorado. And with Emmylou Harris, he wrote her hit, "Boulder to Birmingham. In 1976, using Fat City as the core, Bill added Jon Carroll and Margot Chapman to form the Starland Vocal Band, which quickly gained national fame with the monster hit, "Afternoon Delight". The band recorded for John Denver's Windsong label. Starland recorded five albums and toured the major clubs, concert halls, arenas and festivals throughout the United States. Bill's songs,
"Afternoon Delight", "Baby, You Look Good To Me Tonight", "Late Nite Radio" and "Friends with You" led to 5 Grammy Nominations, 2 Grammy Awards, (Best New Artist of the Year and Best Arrangement for Voices) 2 ASCAP Awards for Outstanding Country Song and 3 Top 10 country hits. There were numerous television appearances including the Tonight Show, the Merv Griffin Show ("I remember watching these shows all those years ago..." Joyce) and their own CBS series, The Starland Vocal Band Show, that among other things, introduced neophyte comedian David Letterman to the public. In 1990, Bill released his first solo recording for his own Watch Your Head Music Company, SOUVENIR, which contains his new folk classic "Potter's Wheel" also recorded by Denver, Freyda and Acoustic Atta Tude and others. The timelessness of Bill Danoff's songs continues to be proven. "Afternoon Delight" is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and can be heard in hit movies like "Good Will Hunting" and "Boogie Nights" and Bill sang it for classmate President William Clinton at the Class of 1968 25th Reunion at The White House. He appeared in the film "TIN MEN" (1987) with Richard Dreyfus and Danny DeVito. Bill's outstanding solo acoustic act combines his songwriting skills with his formidable ability to entertain. It's pop, country, rock and roll and folk, all woven together. Bill possesses a remarkable storytelling ability as he recounts tales of how these songs come to be. His deep, rich voice can deliver every emotional nuance of a sensitive ballad and then swing into rock-and -roll raucous. His guitar accompaniment moves from delicate finger picking into percussive slaps and strums as the music demands. His lyrics range from the haunting to the hilarious with songs like the thought- provoking "Potter's Wheel" or the irreverent "You Gotta Love The Irish" which instantly got him banned from the first place he performed it. Bill's shows, like his songs, are sparkling with wit, comprised of exceptional music and definitely should not be missed.
An up-and-coming Washington, D.C. area performer and songwriter, Owen Danoff, son of Bill Danoff, has song in his blood. At age 16 he wrote his first song, but it was not until he was 20 years old, and soon to be a senior at Berklee College of Music (Class of 2011), that he began performing. Owen's music has been described as a marriage of Jakob Dylan (& the Wallflowers) and Taylor Swift - lots of lyrical consideration, but with a healthy appreciation of pop and rock music. His other influences are many: Warren Zevon to John Mayer, Johnny Cash to Green Day. In live performance, his lyrical variety is obvious, a tongue-in-cheek number followed easily by a soulful ballad. On a solo show, Owen plays guitar, but prefers the bass and plays that when he is with a band. His ability to perform, combined with his comfortable, inviting stage presence form a talent that is not to be missed.

SEAMUS KENNEDY

Thursday, February 9
Tickets $18
"...a wonderfully entertaining Irishman with a happy-to-see-you smile that could light up the sky...a captivating performance." Anchorage Times
Long before there was a computer on every desk, Seamus Kennedy was providing "interactive entertainment" to delighted audiences from one end of the country to another. He is quick with a quip and likes nothing better than to discover someone in the audience who is similarly inclined. He makes it all seem so effortless that it is easy to miss that he is a superb instrumentalist with an apparently infinite repertoire. The depth of his musicality allows him to tailor his show to the audience before him, whether it be children, families or adults. Originally from Belfast in Northern Ireland, Seamus sings the music of his native land with emotion born of knowing its history firsthand. But he is far from simply a singer of Celtic songs. Fast-paced humor is very much a part of what Seamus does, whether he's telling a series of rapid-fire jokes or launching into a lyrical parody. He will segue seamlessly from an Irish ballad about a dying town to a rollicking reel and then move into American music, equally at home with folk, pop, country or traditional. Throughout it all, he is having such a grand time that you can't help but want to join in.

GARNET ROGERS

Thursday, March 15
Tickets $20
"I have found strength and comfort in his songs. This is good and rich and big music. Welcome one and all. Come on in. Get down." ~ Greg Brown
"The greatest interpreter and vocalist performing in the contemporary folk scene." ~ Sing Out
Born in Hamilton, Ontario to parents of Nova Scotian descent, Garnet Rogers spent many hours in front of the old floor model radio listening to Grand Ol' Opry broadcasts and harmonizing with his brother, the late folk legend Stan Rogers. Two years later, Garnet was playing the definitive 8-year-old's version of "Desolation Row" on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute, violin and guitar. At 18, Garnet was on the road as a full-time working musician with brother Stan. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential duos in the history of North American folk music. Garnet acted as producer and arranger for his older brother from 1973 to 1983, when Stan died tragically in a plane crash. Since then, Garnet has courageously established himself as a formidable solo artist. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a "...charismatic performer and singer — one of the major talents of our time," they continue by saying that "Garnet’s vocal and instrumental talents are complimented by an undeniably powerful physical presence — close to six and a half feet tall — with the lungs to match." With his "smooth, dark baritone," (Washington Post) his incredible range and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, his songs give expression to the unspoken language of the heart. An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small everyday victories. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humor and lightning-quick wit move his audiences from tears to laughter and back again. Rogers has been the featured performer on numerous television and radio programs including Much Music, Mountain Stage, and All Things Considered. He has been a headliner at concert venues and festivals such as Wolf Trap, Lincoln Center, and Art Park; sharing the stage with performers such as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Billy Bragg, Bill Monroe, Ferron, Greg Brown, and Guy Clark. Though Garnet has enjoyed much popularity over the years, he remains resolutely independent, turning down offers from major labels to ensure that he continues doing music his own way.
